CCI: Introduction to Identification and Care of Photographic Materials Webinars
This Canadian Conservation Institute webinar series is co-presented by the Ontario Museum Association (OMA) and Galeries Ontario / Ontario Galleries (GOG). This is a 3-part online introduction to the identification and care of photographic materials. This workshop discusses how to identify some photographic processes as well as the structure, composition and format of a selected range of photographic materials. Proper storage and handling techniques for photograph collections will also be covered. Each webinar will last 1.5-2 hours. The webinars can be considered as an introduction to the two-day in person CCI workshop, Care and Handling of Photographic Materials, that provides a more complete hands-on experience with in-depth lecture content. The first two webinars will be held in Zoom webinar format and the final discussion will be held in Zoom meetings format. WEBINAR DATES: Thursday, February 4, 2021, 10am-12pm Eastern Thursday, February 11, 2021, 10am-12pm Eastern Thursday, February 18, 2021, time TBC LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to: ● Identify and explain differences in structure and composition of some types of photographic materials ● Have a general understanding of proper handling and storage procedures for photographic collections as well as select appropriate housing enclosures and storage materials UNITS Structure, composition and formats Understanding the composition and structure of photographic materials in order to identify types and formats of prints. This will serve to facilitate the identification of photographic processes. Storage, handling and display Proper storage conditions, including temperature, relative humidity, light, pollution levels, types of storage rooms and storage containers. Procedures to minimize physical and chemical damage, including protecting the surface from oxidizing agents during exhibition and when researchers handle the photographs.   WEBINAR ONE: IDENTIFICATION This first webinar will cover some basic principles of photography, as well as the main characteristics and key identification features of seven of the most common photographic processes present in collections. Online identification tools and useful publications will also be shared with the participants. ● Daguerreotypes ● Tintypes ● Albumen prints ● Collodion chloride prints ● Gelatin silver prints ● Chromogenic prints ● Digital prints WEBINAR TWO: CARE The second webinar will address the ideal storage conditions, handling and housing for photographic materials. Once again, resources will be shared with the participants for reference and further information. WEBINAR THREE: DISCUSSION Finally, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss specific problems and circumstances unique to their institution and collection relating to the care of photographic materials. Questions will be open and not limited to the material covered during the first two webinars. TARGET AUDIENCE Curators, collections managers, archivists and other personnel responsible for the preservation of archival materials. ATTENDEES MUST HAVE: ● Computer with an active internet connection, and web browser ● Any plug-in necessary to access videoconferencing service (Zoom) ● Microphone and speakers (internally in computer, or external) ● A word processing application capable of opening an Openoffice Document (docx) file (eg: MS-Word) and PDF files.
