Session Description

The link between on-line presence and museum visitation has now been established by a number of studies, as has a link between cultural tourism, cultural tourism sites, and museum visits. Social media is moving the control of tourist destination reviews into the hands of visitors, and as portable on-line devices proliferate, use of the internet for planning visits will likely shift from pre-travel planning to last minute (location-based) planning.

CHIN identifies a number of techniques (including search engine optimization techniques, social media strategies, amd location-based web tools) for engaging cultural tourists and visitors. This 45-minute presentation will be followed by a live demonstration of a museum modelled by CHIN in Google Earth's 3D Buildings Layer - a feature on one of the most popular location-based search tools. This feature will be operable on a number of new handheld devices scheduled for release in late 2012. The talk and the demonstration will be followed by a question period.
