Session Description: This case study will offer a real-life example of how a small community museum can step up to become a leader in the local cultural sector. In three short years, the South Grey Museum has gone from a tired community facility in danger of losing its municipal funding to a vibrant centre for cultural leadership. By collaborating on projects with various partners; establishing the municipal Cultural Plan and an online community cultural portal; working with the local library on innovative governance; community outreach through Cultural Roundtables and engaging people of all ages in a new cultural cable channel, the museum has become an important hub for culture and heritage in Grey Highlands. |

Kate Russell is a second-career Curator, emerging from media and community development into museum management. Faced with the challenge of enhancing the relevance of a small community museum, she explored innovative projects & partnerships as well as stepping up the South Grey Museum into a cultural leadership role. The journey pushed boundaries, redefined destinations, inspired collaborations and tempted clashes. Results include a new municipal Cultural Plan, virtual resources and an upcoming community cultural cable television channel. |
