Engaging your Community: A Toolkit for Museums

Pilot Project

From August 2015 to March 2016, the OMA provided facilitation and coaching to support four Ontario partner sites through the Engaging your Community process.

Each site had a Working Group composed of diverse individuals invested in furthering the museum’s engagement with its community.

Now that the project is complete, we can share the experiences of our partner sites with the Ontario museum community.

What is Engaging your Community: A Toolkit for Museums (EYC)?

The toolkit outlines a process through which individual museums can work with the community to assess their relevance and create a plan to deepen their relationship with the community, in turn increasing the sustainability of the museum.

EYC is not a strategic planning process; it is a toolkit to assist museums in organizing and completing self-assessments and community consultations.

It is intended to:

  • Provide your museum with a process to deepen your understanding of what community engagement means to you;
  • Examine, evaluate, and articulate your current relationship with and role in your community;
  • Explore how community engagement can be part of planning and delivery, at all levels and in all aspects of the museum.
