The Indigenous Collections Symposium was a partnership project of the Ontario Museum Association, the Woodland Cultural Centre, and the Indigenous Knowledge Centre at the Six Nations Polytechnic. A Working Group made up of Indigenous and non-Indigenous museum and cultural professionals was formed to lead the programming of a series of webinars followed by a two-day symposium on March 23-24, 2017. Considering the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and building towards Canada’s Sesquicentennial in 2017, the discussion about care and interpretation of Indigenous collections, particularly those held in trust by non-Indigenous organizations, is an important one. The OMA is keen to help facilitate what we hope will be an ongoing conversation in which the OMA, our members, and Indigenous communities in Ontario will continue to engage going forward.
