Engage your MPP today!
With the election decided, now is the time to build and strengthen relationships with the new government. This presents a renewed opportunity for the OMA, and museums, to advocate for access to adequate and stabilizing government support with increased provincial operating funding for our community museums. The OMA will continue to advocate on behalf of Ontario museums to our new government at Queen's Park -- including with letters of congratulations that reiterate the priorities of our sector.

National Indigenous Peoples Day takes place on the summer solstice, June 21, during National Indigenous History Month. On this day, we take time learn more about the diverse cultures, voices, experiences and histories of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

Woodland Cultural Centre hosts a virtual screening of Kayak to Klemtu
Join the Woodland Cultural Centre on June 20, 2022 at 7pm ET for a virtual screening of the film, "Kayak to Klemtu." When a prominent Kitasoo/Xai’Xais activist passes away, his 14-year-old niece Ella (Blaney) embarks on a kayak journey to take his ashes home to Klemtu. It’s a race against the clock as Ella tries to make it back in time to give a speech protesting a proposed pipeline that would cross Indigenous land.Learn more HERE. |

McMaster Museum of Art unveils 20 years of Indigenous photographic art
On Thursday, June 16, at 3pm, McMaster Museum of Art will host an online panel discussion presented in conjunction with the NIIPA 20/20 exhibition - featuring over 150 photographic works by fifty alumni photographers of the Native Indian/Inuit Photographers’ Association (NIIPA). Museums of Mississauga and Kairos Canada partner to deliver a history lesson with Indigenous Elders
The Kairos Blanket Exercise will be held on Tuesday, June 21 at 6pm. This unique participatory history lesson is developed in collaboration with Indigenous Elders, Traditional Knowledge Keepers and educators, and led by trained Indigenous and ally facilitators. The exercise will give participants (Ages 18+) a new understanding and respect for the reconciliation work that is still needed. This event is part of the City of Mississauga's National Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration. Learn more HERE. |

Art Gallery of Ontario hosts The Stories of the Seven Grandfather Drums
On Tuesday, June 21 at 1:00pm, the AGO marks National Indigenous Peoples Day with a pre-recorded presentation in Walker Court by Ojibwe artist Bomgiizhik (Isaac Murdoch). Follow along as he looks through the work of Anishinaabe artist Robert Houle’s Seven Grandfather Drums.

Niagara Falls History Museum hosts
Longhouse Basket Workshop
On Saturday, June 18, 2022 the Niagara Falls History Museum will team up with Kimberly White-Atkins of Talking Turtle Baskets for a Longhouse Basket Workshop. Kimberly is Akwesasne Mohawk of the Turtle Clan. She has been making black ash and sweetgrass baskets for 11 years. She is passing down her knowledge to her children and hopefully to her grandchildren, so they may carry on the tradition of basket making. The event is part of the Museums ongoing Reclaiming Cultural Identity initiatives.

Fort York hosts Indigenous Arts Festival
Visit Fort York on June 18 & 19 for a free, community-focused event with traditional and contemporary Indigenous music, dance, artisan and culinary experiences of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples living across Turtle Island and Indigenous Communities around the world. The Na-Me-Res Annual Traditional Pow Wow returns June 18. Shop at the Indigenous Artisans Market both days and see month-long art installations. Learn more HERE. |

Ojibwe Cultural Foundation hosts
Tuesday Craft Nights
On Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at 5pm, the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation will host a craft night in Enaamijige Yaang Studios. Attendees will be guided by art facilitators to make a Peyote-Stitch Key Chain. Art facilitators will provide their expertise and welcome guests throughout this hands-on experience.

On Tuesday, June 21, 2022, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons will host an event in recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day. This event will encompass a wide variety of unique Indigenous cultural and historical demonstrations such as music, art and traditional teachings.

This year’s theme is Changing Directions: Practice over Permanence. This theme embodies the changing nature of museums and focuses on what museums are currently doing, rather than what they might do in the future.
The Call for Proposals includes subthemes of People, Purpose, and Process, and questions to help get you inspired.

We invite proposal submissions from equity-deserving groups, all levels of museum staff, and volunteers, students, and members of the GLAM sector. We welcome submissions from presenters outside the museum field as well.

Becoming a RE-ORG Coach

Over a period of two months, participants will be able to remotely design and develop a RE-ORG training activity based on a case study; provide recommendations to institutions wishing to undertake a RE-ORG project; and effectively apply coaching skills to lead and advise heritage institutions on their storage needs.
