to attend the Association of African American Museums Conference 2019

The National Museum of African American History and Culture, in partnership with the Ontario Museum Association are offering up to 5 scholarships for Ontario Museum Association Members and Museum Professionals to attend the 2019 Association of African American Museums (AAAM) Conference in Jackson, MS, August 7-10.
This exciting partnership recognizes and furthers the work of the OMA toward Inclusion2025, strengthening museum networks, and the strategic vision outlined in Ontario's Museums 2025: Strategic Vision and Action Plan.

Building on the OMA Conference 2018: Collaborating for Impact
Dr. Deborah L. Mack, Associate Director in the Office of Strategic Partnerships at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), Smithsonian Institution, presented a keynote speech at the Ontario Museum Association Annual Conference 2018, Collaborating for Impact: Not Business as Usual. The Office of Strategic Partnerships (OSP) at the National Museum of African American History and Culture serves as an outward-facing division responsible for leveraging NMAAHC research, programmatic initiatives and other museum professional resources that benefit African American and African Diaspora museums and related cultural institutions. Following the success of the dialogue at the conference, the Office of Strategic Partnership and the OMA worked together to establish a partnership that would provide scholarships for Ontario museum professionals currently working in Ontario Museums on Afro-Canadian projects towards the understanding, interpretation, or presentation of the history, heritage, or experiences of Ontario’s Black community to attend the 2019 AAAM Conference. The partnership will continue the exchange of ideas and establish professional connections between museum professionals. |

Scholarships will be awarded to up to 5 individuals who are currently working in Ontario Museums on Afro-Canadian projects towards the understanding, interpretation, or presentation of the history, heritage, or experiences of Ontario’s Black community, or who have extensive prior experience in Afro-Canadian projects or institutions.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Currently working in an Ontario museum and working on Afro-Canadian projects towards the understanding, interpretation, or presentation of the history, heritage, or experiences of Ontario’s Black community, or have extensive prior experience in that area or with Afro-Canadian Institutions
- OMA Member or willing to become an OMA Member
- Able and willing to travel to Jackson, Mississippi for the AAAM Conference, August 7-10, 2019
Selection Criteria:
- Currently working in an Ontario museum and working on Afro-Canadian projects towards the understanding, interpretation, or presentation of the history, heritage, or experiences of Ontario’s Black community, or have extensive prior experience in that area or with Afro-Canadian Institutions
- Ability to synthesize learnings and pass them on to their institutions and professional networks
- Willing to present their learnings at the OMA Annual Conference 2019 or other OMA Learning Event
The scholarship will contribute to registration, travel, and accommodation.

About the AAAM Conference
The theme of the Conference, Roots of Revolution: Reaching Back | Pushing Forward, signifies a chance to usefully look to our shared past to inform and empower the crafting of our futures amid challenging times.
Museums, archives, libraries, galleries and historic sites have never been neutral, and African American cultural institutions have played central roles in revolutionary movements as we have reached back to the lessons of our past in order to push forward. We have created and sustained spaces of liberation that have fostered black racial and social consciousness and subverted systems of oppression.
This conference will focus on the reach and the push requisite in leading people, developing systems, improving organizations, protecting collections, and impacting futures through the preservation of African American art, history and culture.
