Capital grants provide funding over one year (min. $10,000 to max. $150,000) to help organizations respond to the capital needs of Ontario’s communities by improving the infrastructure Ontarians need to thrive. Whether it’s purchasing equipment, building a new space, or completing renovations, retrofits or repairs, Capital grants support projects that will have a positive impact in your community. Applications open July 6, 2022.

Deadline December 7, 2022

Resilient Communities Fund grants support projects that help rebuild an organization’s capacity, enhance their resiliency, and meet the changing needs of their communities. This fund supports the recovery efforts of organizations impacted by COVID-19 and helps them respond with immediate, medium, and longer-term recovery projects (min. $10,000 to $200,000, with a max. of $100,000 per year).

Small Bytes
Supporting Digitization in Ontario’s Smaller and Rural Museums
Small Bytes: Supporting Digitization in Ontario’s Smaller and Rural Museums is an initiative of the Ontario Museum Association (OMA) funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

With this initiative, the Ontario Museum Association will provide accessible, high-quality online training opportunities to build the digital capacity and skills of Ontario’s smaller and rural museums, to increase accessibility to their collections through digital projects.

Asynchronous & Synchronous School Programs

On June 8 and 15, 2022, the OMA presented "Virtual School Programming" workshops with Christina Sydorko, Educational Program Coordinator at the Oil Museum of Canada NHS. Christina led participants through the tips and tricks for creating asynchronous and synchronous virtual school programs that meet teacher needs and museum goals.

Digital Museums Canada (DMC)
Call for Proposals closes December 1, 2022


DMC provides Canadian museums and heritage organizations with funding and support to create incredible online experiences for their current and future audiences. Starting today, eligible organizations are invited to apply for up to $250,000 in investment funding for digital projects.
 
DMC is the largest national investment program dedicated to supporting digital projects developed by Canadian museum and heritage organizations, such as virtual exhibits and tours, web-based games and educational resources, and more.
 
Museums and heritage organizations can access one of three investment streams:
o   Small investment: $15,000
o   Medium investment: $50,000 to $150,000
o   Large investment: $150,000 to $250,000
 
To date, DMC has invested more than $15 million into more than 200 digital projects. Along with funding, DMC offers expert guidance in digital accessibility, user experience, and inclusive design.
 
The 2022 Call for proposals closes on December 1, 2022.

Digital Access to Heritage -
Museums Assistance Program

Department of Canadian Heritage

Deadline: September 1, 2022


The Digital Access to Heritage component of the Museums Assistance Program (MAP) provides funding to heritage organizations to digitize collections, develop digital content and build their capacity in these areas. Projects must be completed by March 31, 2024.

Engage your MPP today!

With the election decided, now is the time to build and strengthen relationships with the new government. This presents a renewed opportunity for the OMA, and museums, to advocate for access to adequate and stabilizing government support with increased provincial operating funding for our community museums. The OMA will continue to advocate on behalf of Ontario museums to our new government at Queen's Park -- including with letters of congratulations that reiterate the priorities of our sector.

2. Follow MPPs on social media.

ICOM Code of Ethics: New standards for Fundraising and Accessioning
International Council of Museums
 
The ICOM Ethics Committee (ETHCOM) has issued two new standards that complement the ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums:
  • Standards on accessioning: “Museums have the duty to acquire, preserve and promote their collections as a contribution to safeguarding the natural, cultural and scientific heritage. Their collections are a significant public inheritance, have a special position in law and are protected by international legislation. Inherent in this public trust is the notion of stewardship that includes rightful ownership, provenance, permanence, documentation, accessibility and responsible disposal”
  • Standards on development of financial resources: "financial support refers to money raised by a museum from external sources including individuals, philanthropic organizations, foundations, businesses, and governmental bodies. In all circumstances, museums must comply with all applicable laws related to raising funds for its activities and should reference the ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums as a cornerstone of all fundraising policies."

Library and Archives Canada (LAC)


Nations to Nations: Indigenous Voices at Library and Archives Canada is a free multimedia e-book featuring 28 essays and over 140 images. Indigenous staff at LAC wrote the essays to offer personal interpretations of collection items. This e-book provides unique perspectives of First Nations, Inuit and the Métis Nation, and it shows the diversity of the histories, languages and cultures of Indigenous Peoples.

UNDRIP 2022 United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
Indigenous Heritage Circle


The Indigenous Heritage Circle released a report in May 2022 exploring how Canada’s implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) could help inform practices, policies, and legislation to better support Indigenous heritage. This report explores what Indigenous people would like to see as a result and what is necessary for them to fully participate in this discussion as equals. In addition to French and English versions of the report, summaries have been translated into three Indigenous languages.

Workshop Recording: Respectful Terminology -
Creating a National Framework

National Indigenous Knowledge and Language Alliance


On May 2, 2022, NIKLA hosted Respectful Terminology--a national event that brought together over 400 individuals from across cultural memory communities (libraries, archives, museums, etc.)--to discuss current community projects with a similar goal of respectful terminology for all, and to discuss needs and goals of a national, Indigenous-led platform for respectful terminologies.
