Need to Know
Canada's 2021 Budget
Additional Supports for Jobs

On Monday, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, released Budget 2021: A Recovery Plan for Jobs, Growth, and Resilience

Items of interest for museums include:

Museum funding:
  • Community Festivals and Events: $200 million through Canadian Heritage to support local festivals, community cultural events, outdoor theatre performances, heritage celebrations, local museums, amateur sport events, and more. [page 201]
  • $23 million over three years for Canadian Heritage’s Museums Assistance Program to support the digitization of information and collections by non-national museums and heritage institutions, which will allow these institutions to create original content such as educational materials, apps or other virtual activities to enhance the visitor experience. [pages 223 & 537]
  • $47 million in 2021-2022 for Canada’s six national museums and the National Battlefields Commission to address financial pressures caused by COVID-19 and program integrity issues. Funding is also proposed for the RCMP Heritage Centre as it begins the process of transitioning to a new national museum, and to support the completion of the National Museum of Science and Technology’s Ingenium Centre. Finally, funding is proposed for the Canadian Museum of History to support the purchase of the collection of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. [pages 223 & 537]

In addition to the items the OMA shared Monday evening in an eNews Alert, there are additional supports for jobs included in the budget:

  • $371.8 million in new funding for Canada Summer Jobs in 2022-23 to support approximately 75,000 new job placements in the summer of 2022. This is in addition to 2020 Fall Economic Statement funding for approximately 94,000 additional job placements in 2021-22. [page 111]
  • $595 million for the Canada Recovery Hiring Program, which will run from June to November 2021 and make it easier for businesses to hire back laid-off workers or to bring on new ones. [page 128]

May is Museum Month 2021

Since 2000, the OMA has led a campaign for May is Museum Month / Mai, Mois des Musées. The International Council of Museums (ICOM) has declared the theme for International Museum Day 2021 (May 18th) to be "The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine."

In 2021, public awareness of the safe, quality experiences that museums can offer is especially important. For MMM 2021, the OMA encourages museums to use social media and digital tools to share the offers they have for their communities and hyperlocal tourists.

May is Museum Month is an opportunity to showcase the excellent work of museums and engage your supporters! You can download a MMM logo, and plan your upcoming communications:

Thank You, John and Joan!

The OMA would like to thank long time Certificate in Museum Studies Course Directors Joan Kanigan and John Summers for their contributions to the program and to the community of CMS participants they have taught and mentored over the years.

Joan Kanigan, CEO of the Western Development Museum in Saskatchewan, taught Organization & Management of Museums from 2012 until 2021. She took what could seem like a fairly dry topic and used her deep passion and experience in museum governance and management to create a course that was both practical and inspiring.

John Summers, Manager, Heritage Resource Management for the City of Hamilton, taught Exhibit Planning & Design from 2012 until 2020, and co-taught Education Programs from 2018 to 2020. Inspired by his experience as a Course Director, John published a book about exhibit planning and design for small museums. With his co-Course Director Meredith Leonard, he was creative with the form of his courses, creating the Summer Institute: Planning & Designing Programs and Exhibits in 2018, which combined the two courses as one.

Both Joan and John have stepped away from their Course Director roles this year to pursue other opportunities. Please join us in thanking Joan and John for the time and dedication have given to their Course Director roles, and for sharing their knowledge and passion with hundreds of course participants.

Framework for Perserving Heritage Collections
Canadian Conservation Institute

The “Framework Poster for Preserving Heritage Collections” is a quick reference tool that provides heritage professionals with practical advice on how to protect collections from the agents of deterioration. The tool also lists issues related to climate change and sustainability. The recommendations follow the stages of control (avoid, block, detect and respond), and are grouped under three categories: building features, portable fittings and procedures.
