On July 1st, Canada Day
As museum professionals we are entrusted with the role of helping our communities to connect to our histories. This year, let us redouble our efforts to explore the totality of that history and the ways that it was and is experienced by different people in different ways. Let this Canada Day be one of reflection, when we hold space for those who are grieving, and we consider how to live out our ideals as Canadians so that our work as museum professionals is ever more nuanced, inclusive, and respectful.

From Inclusion 2025: A Practitioner's Guide to Inclusive Museums: "Museums have historically held the power to shape public narrative and decide which stories and objects from the past should be preserved to present to future generations. Recent conversations in the museum sector are beginning to recognize the importance of the voices and stories that have historically been excluded from the dominant narratives, and the ethical imperative for museums to include the full diversity of these narratives and embody a more inclusive approach to our work overall." Partnering with Ontario's Museums on the Journey to Digital Transformation: Faculty Research Spotlight
The OMA has been embarking on a three-year partnership with George Brown College to use analytics to develop support programs for the digitization transformation of Ontario museums. As members will recall, Professor Karen Sinotte joined us for a session at last year's conference called How Digitalization will Transform Museums: An Industry Panel Perspective which spoke on this partnership. In summer 2020, students in the Analytics for Business Decision program used open data sources to help the Toronto Railway Museum understand factors that impact visitor behaviour. Since then, there have been many analytics projects underway and on the horizon, as well as the development of a digital campaign for the Canadian Canoe Museum and an integrated marketing campaign for the Bata Shoe Museum.

Minister of Canadian Heritage on Budget 2021
- $41 million for the Museums Assistance Program (MAP)
- $34 million for Canada’s six national museums and the National Battlefields Commission
- $23 million to help museums across the country digitize information and collections
- $12 million to support the Young Canada Works (YCW) Heritage program
In Budget 2021, the Government of Canada committed $1.9 billion to help support the recovery and reopening of the arts, culture, heritage and sport sectors. This funding, to be delivered over the next five years by the Department of Canadian Heritage and Canadian Heritage portfolio organizations, will help ensure recovery and growth.
The Recovery Fund for Arts, Culture, Heritage and Sport Sectors will provide $300 million over two years. It includes two streams: Reinforcing Recovery Foundations and Investing in the Recovery.
The Reopening Fund will provide $200 million over two years through existing programs to support Canada’s festivals, cultural events, outdoor theatre performances, heritage celebrations, local museums, amateur sport events, and more. It will be delivered by Canadian Heritage, the Canada Council for the Arts and Telefilm Canada.
As part of Budget 2021 funding for the arts, culture, heritage and sport sectors, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage, announced $41 million to support heritage organizations across Canada in 2021–22. This funding will be delivered through the Museums Assistance Program (MAP) and builds on the $53 million provided by the government as part of the COVID-19 Emergency Fund for Heritage Organizations in support to organizations with heritage collections.
- Budget 2021 also committed a total of $34 million for 2021–22 to help Canada’s six national museums and the National Battlefields Commission
- The Government of Canada is also investing $23 million over three years to help museums across the country digitize information and collections. This funding will be delivered through a new component of the MAP to support the development of original content such as educational materials, apps or other virtual activities aimed at enhancing the visitor’s experience in person and online. More details on the call for applications and eligibility criteria will be made available in the coming months.
- The government continues to support the Young Canada Works (YCW) Heritage program. To address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, $12 million in supplementary recovery funds will be made available in 2021–22 to help create 1,240 additional jobs and internships.

With a national investment of $500 million over two years, the fund will support not-for-profit organizations, municipalities and other community groups, as well as Indigenous communities to:
