Support for Ontario Museums in 2020 Budget
The Ontario Museum Association has recommended two areas for funding to the Ministry of Finance and the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs in advance of Ontario’s 2020 budget.
The two recommended areas for funding are:
- Create Jobs for Young People in Growing Sectors
- Develop Digital Access & Engagement for Rural Communities

1. Writing a letter to your MPP to request a meeting:

Ontario Museums Receive Priority Registration for OF/BY/FOR ALL Bootcamp at ROM
Secure your team’s spot by February 17, 2020 before registration opens more widely.
This bootcamp is an opportunity for your team to get hands-on training in building authentic and impactful community partnerships. The event is being held at the ROM on April 28-29, 2020 and presented by OF/BY/FOR ALL, a global nonprofit that empowers civic and cultural organizations to become of, by, and for their diverse communities.

Building upon the discussions from the 2017 Indigenous Collections Symposium, and with a focus on putting ideas into practice, this two-day event aims to support and connect museum professionals from Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations and members of Indigenous communities.

Minister Lisa Thompson visits the Canadian Automotive Museum
The Honourable Lisa Thompson, Minister of Government and Consumer Services (pictured right), visited the Canadian Automotive Museum in Oshawa to showcase Ontario’s new license plates with the slogan “A Place to Grow”. Minister Thompson toured the museum with Executive Director and Curator Alexander Gates, pictured left.

Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre receives $21,000 for theatre upgrades
Sault Ste. Marie MP Terry Sheehan (pictured) announced that the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre would receive $20,772 from the Canada Cultural Spaces fund for audio visual upgrades to two of its theatre spaces.
The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage, stated, “Our government knows that investments in arts and culture help build vibrant communities. We are proud to support improvements to spaces like the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, which provide access to unique educational experiences for residents and visitors, and help preserve the heritage of local communities.”

Dryden & District Museum receives funding for compact storage
The Dryden & District Museum has received $19,000 from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund towards the $37,700 cost of new high-density collections storage project.
“We are looking forward to the completion of the project as it will help improve the preservation of objects currently part of the permanent collection, but also provide space for future artifact donations,” said Museum and Heritage Coordinator for the City of Dryden, Bethany Waite (pictured).

Art Gallery of Hamilton receives funding for feasibility study
Art Gallery of Hamilton will be supported by the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund for $112,875 towards a feasibility study of potential significant renovation and improvements to storage, displays, interpretation, and an expanded mandate.

Museum Associations Meet with Minister of Canadian Heritage
The Ontario Museum Association was honoured to join with the Canadian Museums Association and Toronto-area museum leaders for a roundtable with the Minister of Canadian Heritage, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault (pictured fourth from left) on January 16 at the Royal Ontario Museum.
The discussion emphasized the need for a new National Museum Policy, a review of funding streams and a simplification of the funding application process, as well as an expansion of the Museums Assistance Program.
The OMA looks forward to further collaboration with the Canadian Museums Association and our provincial and territorial colleagues on these critical items for museums. Read more from the Canadian Museums Association HERE.

Call for Nominations: Inscriptions to the Canada Memory of the World Register
Deadline: March 2, 2020
The Canadian Commission for UNESCO (CCUNESCO) is pleased to launch the third Call for Nominations for inscriptions on the Canada Memory of the World Register. This Register recognizes significant documentary heritage related to Canada and its peoples, and is one of the vehicles of the UNESCO Memory of the World Program which aims at preserving and providing access to documentary heritage as the embodiment of the memory of humanity.
Special calls for proposals are also extended for documentary heritage related to Black Canadians and Indigenous languages and cultures. Read more HERE.
