The OMA Annual Conference 2020 provides an opportunity to reflect on how Ontario museums are currently working, and can become more engaged, with worldwide initiatives to improve the lives of people, protect the planet, strengthen our institutions, and ensure prosperity for all.
The OMA welcomes proposals that discuss the successes, lessons learned, and a “think global, act local” approach in museum work today. Some questions to consider are:
- What work is your museum doing in support of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?
- How have you collaborated in pursuit of common goals, leveraged your skills and unique resources, or used a new approach to enhance positive impacts?
- How have your museum spaces or collections served a sustainable or empowering purpose?
- How does your museum support the health of the people around you?

Canadian Conservation Institute Workshop 2020: Mount-making
Presented in Partnership with the Ontario Association of Art Galleries
This year’s CCI Workshop took place at Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre in Oakville, Ontario on February 5-6, 2020.
Led by Carole Dignard and Kathleen Sullivan, the workshop focused on mount-making, and covered strategies for designing and creating mounts that would protect and support objects. The participants were also able to apply their knowledge through designing and producing their own mounts.
Thank you to the Oakville Museum for hosting this event and to the Canadian Conservation Institute for offering this workshop in Ontario.

Creative Space Projects: A Brainstorming Workshop 2020

Join ArtsBuild Ontario for a structured brainstorming session, a panel with three experienced Arts Professionals, and a mock plan for a creative hub designed by Interior Design students!
This workshop provides the opportunity for participants to discuss their projects and openly problem-solve with others tackling similar projects. Participants will be guided through a series of exercises that will allow them to brainstorm solutions or ideas around their own issues.

aabaakwad 2020 Nirin - A Four Day Program Focused on Indigenous Arts and Cultures

OMA members are invited to attend aabaakwad (it clears after a storm) 2020 taking place from March 14-17, 2020 as part of NIRIN, Sydney Biennale 2020.
aabaakwad 2020 NIRIN is a collaboration between aabaakwad founder Wanda Nanibush, an Anishinaabe curator of Indigenous Art at the AGO and Wiradjuri artist/scholar Brook Andrew, Artistic Director for the 22nd Biennale of Sydney. Among the featured artists, curators, and thinkers travelling from more than 24 First Nations and 13 countries.

Zainub Verjee Receives Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts
Executive Director of the Ontario Association of Art Galleries receives Outstanding Contribution Award
The OMA congratulates our esteemed colleague Zainub Verjee who has won the Outstanding Contribution Award. She has seamlessly played multiple roles and has shaped culture policy at all levels of government and was instrumental in building cultural institutions and organizations in Canada and internationally. Fuelled by passion, vision and a staunch conviction that art is a public good, Zainub is regularly invited to speak nationally and internationally and has been published in numerous academic, cultural and critical fora.

Canada Summer Jobs
Application Deadline: February 24, 2020
Canada Summer Jobs is an initiative of the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, which aims to provide flexible and holistic services to support all young Canadians develop the skills and gain paid work experience to successfully transition in the labour market.
The Canada Summer Jobs program objectives align with the redesigned Youth Employment and Skills Strategy and are as follows:
- provide quality work experiences for youth
- respond to national and local priorities to improve access to the labour market for youth who face unique barriers
- provide opportunities for youth to develop and improve their skills
The program provides wage subsidies to employers from not-for-profit organizations, the public-sector, and private sector organizations with 50 or fewer full-time employees, to create quality summer work experiences for young people aged 15 to 30 years. As in 2019, funded employers are no longer restricted to hiring students: all youth aged 15 to 30 years may be eligible participants.

Seed Grants Deadline

Seed grants are all about trying something new or untested, where the outcomes are unknown.
All projects need to be focused on seeding new ideas or approaches that will drive at achieving greater impact in their community. The Seed Investment Stream focuses on four types of projects, which enable positive change in our communities.
- Convene around an emerging issue
- Conduct a feasibility study
- Research a new concept
- Develop or pilot a new idea

2020 Summer Experience Program (SEP)
Application Deadline: February 27, 2020 at 5:00 PM ESTThe Summer Experience Program provides funding to eligible not-for-profit organizations, municipalities, Indigenous organizations and First Nation communities in order to create meaningful summer employment opportunities for students.
The summer employment positions must focus on activities supporting key sectors within the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries and the Citizenship and Immigration Division of the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services.
SEP employment opportunities must offer training, work experience and skills transferable to the general workforce and to future careers. The positions must focus on activities that support the key sectors of citizenship and immigration, tourism, heritage, culture, sport and recreation.

YCW Building Careers in Heritage Internships

Young Canada Works (YCW) at Building Careers in Heritage is an internship program for unemployed or underemployed college or university graduates. It helps graduates make the transition from college or university to the workplace, allowing them to hone their professional skills and begin a career in the heritage, arts and cultural sectors. YCWBCH funds heritage internships that can last up to one year in length, for recent college/university graduates between the ages of 15 and 30. Read more HERE.
