2019-2020 CMOG Grants
Members reported having received this year’s Community Museum Operating Grants earlier this week. While we understand that there may have been challenges with the migration of Grants Ontario to the new Transfer Payments Ontario portal, delays were significant and may impact planned programs and services offered by museums. We know that CMOG-funded museums are assets to their communities, and this vital funding supports their work as tourism destinations and as stewards of our province’s material heritage.The Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries, especially through the CMOG grant, is a key supporter of Ontario’s museums. We encourage a timely delivery of operating funding grants.The OMA welcomes any comments about the CMOG application and granting process. Please reach out to mlalonde@museumsontario.ca.

Updates to Foreign Cultural Objects Immunity from Seizure Act
The provincial government has passed legislation for a new Foreign Cultural Objects Immunity from Seizure Act (FCOISA) to streamline the administrative process for cultural institutions in Ontario for cultural object loans for exhibits.This legislation aims to create an efficient and transparent process whereby institutions would be designated and need to apply only once for immunity from seizure as opposed to applying on an exhibition-by-exhibition basis.The new legislation was passed as part of the government’s Better for People, Smarter for Business Act and can be seen in its entirety HERE.The Ministry is planning to consult with Ontario’s cultural institutions on regulations under this new legislation and the application process to ensure the successful implementation of the new FCOISA legislation. Please note that the existing FCOISA process is still in effect until the new regulations are developed and approved.

Consultations for Budget 2020
Ahead of Ontario’s 2020 Budget, the provincial government has launched a consultation process. The timing and process for in-person consultations have not yet been released, but written and online submissions are now being accepted.

West Parry Sound District Museum greets
MPP Norm Miller
The West Parry Sound District Museum (aka “The Museum on Tower Hill”) welcomed Parry Sound—Muskoka MPP Norm Miller to a preview of new elements in their gallery space. Thanks to a $13,100 capital grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Museum was able to purchase two new display cases and lighting.

Schneider Haus receives funding for senior outreach
Schneider Haus National Historic site, in partnership with the Region of Waterloo Library, received $5,086 in funding to support the Making Connections program of senior outreach in four rural townships. The grant was awarded by the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility through the Seniors Community Grant Program. Outreach programs that reduce social isolation can support the health of Ontario’s older adults.

Museum Impact Survey
With thanks to the museum sector for their contributions, some highlights from the Museum Impact Survey were presented at the OMA Annual Conference 2019 in Brantford on October 23rd.
We learned even more about the wide variety of the work Ontario’s museums do and what impacts they have in their communities.
Some highlighted statistics:
- 96% of museums describe themselves as a community museum
- 70% of reported collections include Indigenous objects
- 17 non-official languages are represented in museum content
- 60% of respondents have at least one building more than 100 years old

Ontario's Regional Museum Networks (RMNs) have been working with the OMA to collect submitted applications to this year's Community Museum Operating Grant (CMOG), to be able to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in the sector.

With the theme “Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion”, International Museum Day 2020 will celebrate the diversity of perspectives that make up the museum community, and champion tools for identifying and overcoming bias in what they display and the stories they tell.
