 Property and Energy Tax Rebates for Museums

Businesses that were required to shut down or significantly restrict services due to provincial public health measures (in areas with modified Stage 2 restrictions or categorized as control or lockdown) can apply for rebates, provided in the form of grants, to help with their fixed costs.

Eligibility: Support is available for businesses, including community centres, multi-purpose facilities, and museums, that were required to close or significantly restrict services as a result of provincial modified Stage 2 public health measures announced on October 9, 2020. Going forward, areas categorized as control or lockdown qualify.

To apply, you will have to submit proof of costs. For property tax rebates, this includes your property tax bills (or proof of costs associated with property taxes). For energy cost rebates, this includes a digital copy of the first energy bill (including electricity, natural gas, propane or other) you received on or after the day Stage 2 restrictions were put in place in your region. You can also submit other energy bills if your business is heated by propane or heating oil.

Digital Decision-making: Approaches to Online Engagement During Museum Closure
Enforced closures have changed the way that museums and art galleries engage with their audiences. For some this has been a matter of scaling up what they were already doing, for others it has meant entering uncharted territory. In this webinar, Moyez Jadavji and Amirali Alibhai (Aga Khan Museum), Robert Iantorno (South Grey Museum), and Danuta Sierhuis and Kate Yüksel (Agnes Etherington Art Centre) discuss how they have approached online engagement and how they make decisions about their strategies and approaches based on their missions, the resources available to them, and their goals.

Making Engaging Online Projects, with Virtual Museum of Canada
The Virtual Museum of Canada is an investment program that helps Canadian museums and heritage organizations build digital capacity so we can all access a wide variety of stories and experience. VMC Director Megan Richardson shares the exciting changes the program is making to better serve you and your visitors. Learn about some of the benefits of VMC funding, see some inspiring online projects – like virtual exhibits and tours – and get some tips on how to conceive, pitch and develop your own project.

Scenario Planning with Consulting Matrix, Co-presented with the Ontario Association of Art Galleries
In this time of extreme uncertainty, scenario planning offers a methodology for thinking about what might happen so that organizations can prepare for a range of possibilities. Judy Wolfe and Karen Wishart of Consulting Matrix facilitate a small group of sector leaders while other participants observe the process. Observing participants ask questions of the panelists as they work through the agenda and scenario planning.

Funding Opportunities
Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS) 
The new rent subsidy supports businesses, charities, and non-profits that have suffered a revenue drop by providing support up to a maximum of 65% of eligible expenses.
On November 23, the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue, opened the CERS to receive applications from qualifying organizations. These organizations can now apply directly for the subsidy for the period from September 27 to October 24, 2020 through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) My Business Account, or Represent a Client portals. Applications for the second CERS period (October 25 to November 21, 2020) will open on November 30.

Deadline for Projects and Community Capacity Building components is January 12, 2021
The Community Support, Multiculturalism, and Anti-Racism Initiatives Program supports the mandate of the Department of Canadian Heritage by building on Canada's strength as a diverse and inclusive society.

The Program's objectives are to:
  • support communities in confronting racism and discrimination, promoting intercultural and interfaith understanding and fostering equitable opportunities to participate fully in Canadian society
  • promote and engage in discussions on multiculturalism, diversity, racism and religious discrimination at the domestic and international levels
  • strengthen research and evidence to build understanding of the disparities and challenges faced by racialized and religious minority communities, and Indigenous Peoples

Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage
& The Canada Cultural Spaces Fund (CCSF)
The Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program was created to help you celebrate your community – both its past and its present. This program increases opportunities for local artists, artisans, heritage performers or specialists to be involved in their community through festivals, events and projects. It also allows local groups to commemorate their local history and heritage. The Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program offers funding through three separate components: 
  1. Local Festivals
  2. Community Anniversaries, and the
  3. Legacy Fund.
The Canada Cultural Spaces Fund (CCSF) supports the improvement of physical conditions for arts, heritage, culture and creative innovation. The Fund supports renovation and construction projects, the acquisition of specialized equipment and feasibility studies related to cultural spaces.
  • Deadline: The Canada Cultural Spaces Fund receives applications on an ongoing basis.
  • How to Apply: Interested applicants should contact a CCSF program officer at their nearest regional office of the Department of Canadian Heritage prior to submitting an application.
