ONCA Proclaimed and
Ontario Business Registry
On Tuesday, October 19, 2021, the Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, 2010 came into effect, along with a new Ontario Business Registry. Ontario non-for-profit corporations will now be able to access an online government system; modernizing governance, reducing bureaucratic burden, enhancing flexibility by moving to digital services, and eliminating the duplication of paperwork and other redundancies. 

Registrations or filings that were previously submitted by mail or fax can now be done instantly through the Ontario Business Registry. Additionally, Annual returns can be completed in the registry, which is integrated with the Canada Revenue Agency.

Session: "Articulating the Value of Museums to our Communities"
Speakers: Jennifer Forsyth, Caroline Loewen, and Victoria Dickenson, Museums for Me

"Museums for Me was launched in 2020 by the consortium of provincial and territorial museums associations and the Canadian Museums Association led by the Alberta Museums Association (AMA). The first phase of the project was to listen to Canadians. Last year, our public engagement campaign asked Canadians from all regions and with diverse backgrounds and interests, what do museums mean to you? 

In this session, the AMA will share some of the initial findings of the research and engagement campaign. We will look at the public’s perception of the role, value, and future of museums, as well as explore how views on museums have changed over time. Finally, we will consider what this information might mean for museums and how we are working to help them better communicate their value to their community."

This gathering is to help you connect, reconnect, and engage with the Ontario museum community and we have a jam-packed day of inspiring sessions about issues relevant to you. Hear from Hamilton Civic Museums, Museums for Me, and Micah Parzen from Museum of Us, San Diego, and more sector innovators!
In recognition of the extraordinary circumstances facing the heritage sector this year, and to facilitate access to Conference programming, discussions, and networking for museum professionals across the province, the OMA is offering a fully subsidized registration category for Conference 2021.
We welcome OMA members who are students, Emerging Museum Professionals, IBPOC museum and cultural workers, and unemployed or under-employed museum workers to register under this category to attend Conference.

We encourage all conference participants to consider a donation to help us build the collective strength of our sector. Each contribution, whatever the amount, helps support OMA programs such as professional development, timely webinars and resources on best practices, advocacy on issues of interest, and much more, creating a more resilient Ontario museum community. Two years ago the OMA started a new tradition of recognizing our colleagues who have retired in the past year at the annual OMA Awards Gala. This year’s awards rollout will look a little different, but we look forward to continuing the tradition!

Share the following information with us so that we can honour the contributions that these individuals have made to our dynamic sector.

Beth Hanna – The path to a more inclusive narrative: sharing experiences

In recent years the Ontario Heritage Trust has designed programs and partnerships to create a more inclusive discussion of heritage, to expand the historical narrative in Ontario using land protection and stewardship, public programs and its social media platforms to explore new approaches to the work we do. We are working with communities across the province, urban and rural, to share their own stories in their own voices, to celebrate the diversity of experiences, languages, customs and perspectives of different people and different places. Drawing from specific examples of programs and property protection, and sharing lessons learned from collaborations with Indigenous nations and racialized communities, Beth will discuss some thinking on new initiatives along with the joys and challenges of the Trust’s work to design protection practices and interpretation approaches that are more honest and inclusive.

Offered by the Canadian Conservation Institute, this series focuses on integrated pest management (IPM), including how to identify pests and understand their capacity to endanger objects and evade control. Participants will learn to evaluate effective ways of reducing pest numbers through specific control methods available to heritage professionals and the risks these methods may pose to collections. Participants will also review how to develop an IPM plan. The target audience is staff and volunteers of cultural facilities who are responsible for the physical integrity, research or exhibition of cultural property collections, which may all be impacted by pest activity.

Sustainable Museums

Where does one begin to tally the environmental impact of an exhibition? Is it in the space itself as the artworks and artefacts are assembled? Or is it in the very first steps of the process, which might involve mining for heavy metals and pigments, manufacturing chemicals and products, and laying the fiber optic cables that underlie the systems of communication that are key components of exhibition making. Guided by these questions, Plastic Heart aims to create a low-carbon exhibition throughout all stages of its making from the size of artworks and geographic proximity of artists, to shipping, material sourcing, installation, exhibition waste, powering media, and web presence. This panel will consider the complexities of this process, how to improve, and will look to other models that critically address aggregate forms of sustainability as motivators for change in the arts.
