How to Engage in Federal Election 2021: Rules for Charities & Nonprofits
Imagine Canada
"Election campaigns are a great time to engage in public conversation on all manner of issues. On September 20th, the next government will receive a mandate from voters, and our sector in particular is well-positioned to promote the interests of communities to both the public and to those who will soon be tasked with approving and implementing public policy for the critical few years to come. In recent years, some of the rules of engagement for charities and nonprofits during federal election campaign periods have changed."

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Resources for September 30
September 30 has been designated the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, as per the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action #80: “We call upon the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.”
We encourage our members to listen to and amplify the voices of Indigenous peoples and communities. Retired senator Murray Sinclair, former chairman of the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission, spoke to Maclean's regarding reconciliation and colonial systems, which you can read HERE.
Over the years, Indigenous museum professionals and organizations have generously shared their work with Ontario's museum sector. We encourage museums to learn from the teachings and examples of Indigenous Elders, colleagues, and organizations.

October 19 - Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA) Takes Effect |
|
|
ONCA Legislation to be Proclaimed Ontario Nonprofit Network
"The Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA) will be proclaimed on October 19, 2021. This legislation, over ten years in the process and ONN’s founding issue is the enabling corporate legal framework for most nonprofits incorporated under provincial law. Nonprofits will have three years after the proclamation to transition to the new rules."
|
|
Future Law: ONCA Nonprofit Law Ontario
"The Government of Ontario has said that Ontario’s Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA) will replace Ontario’s Corporations Act on October 19, 2021. While existing nonprofits must change their articles or letters patent to comply with ONCA, they are not required to pass new bylaws. However, it’s a good idea to update your bylaws. If you don’t, your nonprofit will have a set of bylaws that don’t reflect the rules that apply to your nonprofit."

Accessibility in Creative Spaces: A Toolkit for Ontario Arts Organizations ArtsBuild Ontario
In this toolkit, ArtsBuild Ontario provides some basic resources about accessibility legislation in Ontario, including the AODA and Design of Public Spaces Standards, Ontario Building Code and Human Rights Code. While this toolkit will provide resources for best practices in the built environment, it will also focus on experiential accessibility, including how arts organizations are going beyond the built environment to offer inclusive space.
Resources in this toolkit are taken from Ontario, Canada, and international sources. While readers can glean best practices from other examples beyond our province, it is important to note the responsibility to follow accessibility laws pertaining to Ontario and Canada. All topics and resources have been identified and supported by an Accessibility Advisory Committee, all of whom are leaders in the arts sector, as well as DesignABLE Environments. This toolkit is supported by the Government of Ontario.

Who Includes Whom? Listening, Before (Story) Telling in Museums By: Anna Chiara Cimoli, ICOM Voices
The art of listening seems to be a key skill for our times, in response to a dominant ‘us and them’ narrative which fails to take into account human diversity.
Intercultural dialogue is called for to remove emphasis from the question of mere ‘ethnicity’ – not to deny its importance, but, on the contrary, to take ‘diversity' as a constitutive datum for each society. It is a framework to create a sense of belonging and shared civil objectives, public spaces and platforms for dialogue. How can museums play their part in this scenario?

Curating for Change: Disabled People Leading in Museums By Esther Fox and Jane Sparkes, UK
This report begins to explore where the UK is now in terms of engaging D/deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people with museums and urges the sector to proactively consider ways to increase this engagement, capitalising on the momentous shifts that have occurred during the past year, and preventing regression towards the long-held status quo. Over the coming months and years, they will build a suite of resources and will be reaching out to others to share best practice and positive actions for the museum sector.
