May is Museum Month

International Museum Day 2022

Le français suit.

May is Museum Month is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of museums to their communities and to kick-off 2022’s summer tourism season! With so many Ontarians take ‘staycations’ this year, museums are a vital asset to hyperlocal tourism. As visitors are once again welcomed through your doors, museums can emphasize all the ways that the public can experience their collections and stories—from fully online to safe, in-person experiences!

With this year’s International Museum Day theme of The Power of Museums, we want to highlight all the ways that museums are bringing positive change to their communities through contributing to achieving sustainability, innovating in digitalization and accessibility, and building communities through education. This May is Museum Month, show your community the power of your museum!

#MuseumsConnectON                        #MayIsMuseumMonth

We encourage members to continue with their current work; providing digital experiences, engaging their community, and connecting to each other.

A Message from Her Honour the Honourable
Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontari

May 2022
"As Lieutenant Governor, I have been fortunate to have toured wonderful museums, galleries, and heritage sites all across this province. From these visits, I have seen how these are lively and forward-thinking organizations that are engaging with, and evolving alongside, their communities. Moreover, it is evident that their captivating programming is reflective of our diversity, is able to spark essential dialogue and deepen understanding on contemporary issues in provocative and edifying ways.

Therefore, it is with a sense of gratitude that I recognize “May is Museum Month” and applaud the Ontario Museum Association on the proud occasion of its 50th anniversary. On behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, I express my thanks to museum professionals for their commitment to making our world-class institutions even better. All Ontarians, and visitors from around the world, can benefit greatly from what you have to offer. May your efforts continue to point the way toward a more just, sustainable, society and country.

Elizabeth Dowdeswell"
